B) Professional Information:

Program aims:

The specific aims of the biophysics program are to:

 1.1. Give the students the ability to apply the theories and methods of the physical sciences in biological subjects.1

1.2. Provide students to contribute an interesting way in combining biological science and the application of physical principles in biological systems and medical science.

1.3. Develop the ability of students to understanding the Measurement devices, as well as mathematical and physical models for understanding and knowledge of living systems.

1.4. Prepare the students to observe, analyze, understand and communicate effectively in order to make decisions with acknowledgement of uncertainties.

1.5. Give the students the ability to design and conduct biophysical experiments and to analyze, interpret and report data with Arabic and English languages.

1.6. Provide students with knowledge and skills of scientific concepts to solve complex biophysical problems, and to engage in research and technological development.

1.7. Make the student able to work within multi-disciplinary teams and professional and ethical responsibilities.

Attributes of a biophysicist:

The graduates of the biophysics should demonstrate outstanding skills as follows:

2.1. Apply mathematical knowledge and the physical, chemical concepts to find a solution to the complex biological processes.

2.2. Recognize the role of basic sciences in the development of society.

2.3. Provide by a good basic knowledge on the composition and functions of the biological system at many levels ranging from DNA (one molecule) to the level of the organism.

2.4. Design and conduct experiments, analysis and interpretation of data.

2.5. Work with multidisciplinary groups and good communication and effectively with others.

2.6. Connect the physical properties of the material with energy composition and biological functions.

2.7. Place and ideas and results within the framework of mathematical quantitative prediction of what is happening inside living systems.

2.8. Deal with scientific data and communicate about specific subjects appropriately in Arabic, English or other languages.

2.9. Use effectively information technology relevant to the field.

2.10. Commitment to the ethics of the profession.

2.11. Know the importance of assessing risks and make good judgments about the risk factors.

 

Academic Standards

The Program Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO’s) are developed according to the National Academic Reference Standards (NARS) for Bachelor degree of biophysics published by the National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education (NAQAAE).

Knowledge and understanding

By the end of the program, the graduate will gain knowledge and understanding to be able to:

a1. Know and understand most of the concepts, principles and laws of physics, chemistry and can also linking them to various applications in the field of physics.

a2. Understand the components of large molecules biological systems and explain the mechanism of production of enzymes, cell behavior, phenomena associated with stimulating of nerve, muscle and visual cells.

a3. Explain and interpret the sense process by members of different sense and how to turn it into electrical pulses.

a4. Interpret how to convert chemical energy into mechanical and kinetic forces by muscle cells.

a5. Link between nano-technology of Biophysics topics and cell membranes.

a6. Use the basics of mathematical modeling in biological systems.

a7. Know the wonderful diversity among members of animal kingdom through studying cell biology and histology.

a8. Provide the student with knowledge about radiation biophysics and its importance in the radiotherapy (radiobiology), radio-diagnostic and radio-therapeutic tools used in day to day oncological practice such as Diagnosis of tumors.

a9. Design, develop or select biomaterials products by teaching them how materials properties affect biological behavior.

a10. Apply computer and information technology in different scientific activities.

B- Intellectual skills

By the end of the program, the graduate will be able to:

b1. Use the principles of biophysics to analysis the resulting signals from biological systems.

b2. Choose the best solutions to solve biophysical problems.

b3. Design and apply the existing models on the basis of the results which derived from the basic process of biological system.

b4. Analyze different kinds of microscopic and spectroscopic measurements.

b5. Design a Biomedical Engineering system, component or process to meet a need.

b6. Provides an overview of the immune system with emphasis on aquaculture species.

b7. Carry out simple calculations of physical protection against different types of radiation.

b8. Apply theories of physics to interpret biophysical phenomena.

C- Practical and professional skills

By the end of the program, the graduates will acquire the skills required to:

c1. Apply mathematical methods to examine and analyze the results.

c2. Use of standard criteria for laboratory devices and which are essential to conduct applied research.

c3. Integrate biophysical information and concepts with mental skills in research work.

c4. Use of computer programs in laboratory experiments.

c5. Solve problems arising from a variety of situation, investigate the properties of solution and interpret the results in terms of the original problem.

c6. Apply means of security when dealing with radioactive sources and biological samples.

c7. Utilize the national for laboratory equipment which are essential for practical research work.

General and transferable skills

By the end of the program, the graduate will be able to:

d1. Make a contact between life events and physics laws.

Curriculum structure

                                   a- Program Duration:

Full time attendance of 4 academic years is required for the student to complete the program components and to be awarded the B.Sc. degree in biophysics.
